1 Overview
Fokus Intelligence Inc. (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the Fokus Reader application and the website fokusintelligence.com. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use our products and services.
Fokus Intelligence Inc. is incorporated in Québec, Canada, and is subject to applicable Canadian privacy legislation, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Québec’s Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector (Law 25). We also comply with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for users in the EU/EEA.
By using Fokus Reader, you consent to the data practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of our services.
2 Information We Collect
2.1 Account Information
When you create a Fokus Reader account, we collect the following:

- Books and documents you open (file names and formats such as EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, TXT, PDF, PNG, JPEG)
- Reading preferences and settings (font choice, text size, line spacing, background theme, page width)
- RSS feed subscriptions and reading activity
- Bookmarks, highlights, and notes you create
- Text-to-speech usage and language/voice preferences
- Search queries within the app (book search, Gutenberg library search)
2.3 AI Feature Data
When you use AI-powered features, the following data may be processed:
- Text selections sent for AI explanation, translation, or Wikipedia lookup
- RSS article content submitted for AI summarization
- Images submitted for OCR text extraction
- AI Agent book search queries
2.4 Device & Technical Data
- Device type, operating system, and browser version
- IP address and approximate geographic location
- App version and crash reports
- Language and locale settings
3 How We Use Your Data
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

4 AI Features & Data Processing
Fokus Reader integrates several AI-powered features designed to enhance your reading experience. Here is how data flows through these features:
4.1 AI Translation & Explanation
When you select text and request an AI explanation, Google translation, or Wikipedia lookup, the selected text is sent to the relevant third-party API for processing. We do not permanently store the content of these requests beyond what is needed to deliver the response.
4.2 AI News Summarization
RSS article content is sent to AI language model providers to generate summaries in your chosen language (English, French, Chinese, Spanish, German, or Japanese). Article content is processed in real-time and is not retained after the summary is generated.
4.3 OCR & Image Processing
When you use the OCR feature to extract text from images (PNG/JPEG), the image is processed to extract text. Extracted text may then be translated or read aloud based on your request. We do not retain images after processing is complete.
4.4 AI Agent Book Search
When the Gutenberg Digital Library does not have your requested book, the AI Agent searches additional sources. Your search query is processed to find results, and if no free sources are found, we may display links to Amazon or Google Books. These are affiliate links where applicable.
5 Third-Party Services
Fokus Reader integrates with the following third-party services to deliver its features:

6 Data Storage & Security
We implement industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information:
- All data in transit is encrypted using TLS/SSL protocols
- Passwords are hashed using secure, one-way encryption algorithms
- Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel on a need-to-know basis
- Regular security assessments and vulnerability monitoring
6.1 Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law. Usage and analytics data is aggregated and anonymized after 12 months.
6.2 Data Location
Your data is primarily stored and processed in Canada. Where we use third-party services that process data outside Canada, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, including standard contractual clauses or equivalent measures.

If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child without parental consent, we will delete that information promptly. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us immediately.
10 Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through a prominent notice in the Fokus Reader app at least 30 days before the changes take effect.
